Step outside your comfort zone

Today I learned not to be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. When I say this, I mean it both personally and photographically.

It’s my first full day in Taiwan and despite being alone, I refused to sit in my hotel room while I waited for my co-worker to arrive. Instead, I tackled the (what to many would be the insurmountable) task of finding my way into Taipai via public transportation. I made it into the city, found my way around, and spoke to several people. Better yet, I found my way back to my hotel again.

If I had been too afraid to leave my hotel room, I would never have seen the sights I saw, or spoke to the kind people I did. I took many photographs, despite the rainy weather, and hopefully I caught a few keepers. Even if I didn’t, I had a wonderful experience.

I don’t usually take photos of people, but today I found myself wanting to capture images of the people I came across. This is unusual for me, but it was the people that helped to define the city for me. This is what I mean by stepping out of your comfort zone. A few steps, and a translation app can make the experience just that much better.
